Members Meeting
The theme of our members’ meeting held on 24 June was “Practical Use of AI in Healthcare Facilities,” presented by Carl-Magnus von Behr. Carl shared valuable insights into the advantages and potential benefits of AI for healthcare engineers. This meeting marked a milestone in SAFHE’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality information to its members.
Carl, who is based in the UK, attracted participants from several other countries, highlighting the international reach of our community. This cross-border collaboration reflects SAFHE and IFHE’s dedication to enhancing the value we offer our members.
A recording of the presentation is available on the SAFHE Knowledge Hub.

2026 SAFHE Conference
SAFHE is considering hosting an in-person conference in 2026, planned for the first half of the year. The exact date, location, and theme will be announced soon. We understand the financial pressures many are facing, and our goal is to create a truly unique experience—one that our members have not yet had the opportunity to experience.
To help us prepare and ensure the event meets your needs and expectations, we kindly ask you to complete the attached poll. Your participation is greatly appreciated, as it will guide us in creating a remarkable and memorable experience for you.
Knowledge Hub
As you are aware, the SAFHE Knowledge Hub was launched earlier this year. The goal of this platform is to provide a centralised resource centre that collects, organises, and shares information, research, best practices, and expertise to facilitate learning and knowledge transfer among members and stakeholders.
Currently, the Psychoeducational Leadership Empowerment Program is hosted on the Knowledge Hub, and our aim is to use this platform for courses, mentoring, and information sharing. SAFHE also plans to use the platform to manage its CPD program in line with ECSA guidelines.
We are looking to add more content to the Knowledge Hub and encourage our members to share information. If you have any resources, articles, or insights you’d like to contribute, please forward them to me at petrus@safhe.org.za so they can be uploaded to the platform. Your participation will help us build a richer, more valuable resource for everyone.

What is New
During our members meeting in June, we announced the establishment of a Sustainability hub and Digital hub, to support our members with the challenges experienced in the healthcare engineering discipline. The broadly defined objectives are:
Digital Hub:
A technology-focused centre dedicated to driving digital transformation by offering digital tools, platforms, training, and support. Its purpose is to help organisations adopt new technologies, strengthen their digital capabilities, and enhance their online presence and operations. The hub will be headed up by Albert Kasselman, a seasoned healthcare engineer and highly skilled and experienced digital integrator.
Sustainability Hub:
A dedicated centre focused on promoting environmental responsibility, sustainable practices, and green initiatives by providing resources, guidance, and programs to help organisations reduce their environmental impact and achieve their sustainability goals. We are currently seeking volunteers to lead this exciting initiative. If you are interested in heading up the Sustainability Hub, please forward your name to info@safhe.org.za.

Google trains AI on 300 million sounds to detect diseases via smartphone audio

In Artificial Intelligence progress, Google is advancing by employing a novel method that utilises audio signals to anticipate initial symptoms of sickness.
Google has utilised 300 million audio samples, including coughs, sniffles, and laboured breathing, to train its AI foundation model to identify signs of diseases like Tuberculosis.
Google has teamed up with Salcit Technologies, an AI startup focused on respiratory healthcare in India, to incorporate this technology into smartphones.
High-risk communities in areas with restricted healthcare access could experience a transformation due to this.
